Richmond Parks, Recreation, and Community Facilities Presents Enchanting Production of Once On This Island
Part of the 68th Annual Festival of Arts at Dogwood Dell
RICHMOND, VA – The City of Richmond’s Department of Parks, Recreation, and Community Facilities is proud to present a vibrant new staging of the Tony-nominated musical Once On This Island at Dogwood Dell Amphitheatre, as part of the 68th Annual Festival of Arts. With book and lyrics by Lynn Ahrens and music by Stephen Flaherty, this beloved Caribbean folktale is brought to life through powerful storytelling, dynamic choreography, and a Calypso-infused score.
Performances will take place August 8–10 and August 15–17, 2025, at the scenic Dogwood Dell Amphitheatre in Byrd Park. All performances are free and open to the public, continuing Richmond’s tradition of accessible summer arts programming.
Once On This Island follows Ti Moune, a courageous peasant girl who falls in love with a wealthy boy from the other side of the island. With guidance from the island gods, she sets out on a journey that explores themes of love, sacrifice, and the power of community.
The creative team leading this exciting production includes:
Director: Desirée Dabney
Choreographer: Christine Wyatt
Music Director: Mara Smith
Production Stage Manager: Tariq Karriem
This year’s production marks a historic first for Dogwood Dell, featuring a majority Black cast, an all-Black main creative team, and an all-Black orchestra. This groundbreaking presentation highlights the talent and diversity of Richmond’s arts community and promises a powerful and authentic interpretation of this timeless musical.
“This show is a beautiful blend of folklore, romance, and music,” says the production team. “It’s a story that reminds us of the strength found in love, heritage, and hope.”
